Sunday Setlist [5/3/09] – The Gathering

gathering_050309

I’m participating in the “Sunday Setlists” blog carnival at FredMcKinnon.com.

We had another awesome worship service at our Celebration Campus this morning! Pastor Mark preached on relationships. He really did a cool Rob Bell thing with the message today! He called an audible right before the service and weaved the message in with a song. The band played the song after the message and it was just really cool. I captured the audio for the whole thing… check it out!

Here are some “Markisms” from this morning:

  • When relationships aren’t healthy… they have an impact on other stuff
  • For the kingdom to expand… Jesus had to deal with a lot of relationships
  • Jesus came to bring heaven to earth and he had to deal with family and church
  • We don’t have honor anymore in our communities. If a family member embarrasses us… it’s no big deal anymore. Jesus’ family felt dishonored when Jesus said that everyone was his brothers and sisters
  • Religious community wants the status quo
  • There’s division in some churches over the color of the carpet in the children’s playroom!
  • The church must focus on the needs of many rather than the wants of the few.
  • When we move in harmony… it changes the impact we have on the world!

Set list after the jump…

What I took away are three levels of relationship, each tied into the music. The melody is the simplest…and to me it represents the superficial relationships we have with so many people. We nod, and smile, and exchange pleasantries, but we do little beyond that. Sometimes we even pray for them, but it's more of an afterthought.

The second level of music is rhythm; the melody changes slightly and there is more backbeat with adding the percussion and changing tempo. In terms of relationships, this is where the Spirit starts moving in us…just as the musical rhythm starts us dancing, moving and clapping. These relationships are beyond superficial in that rhythm brings us together in a common purpose…and the Spirit is what inspires that common purpose. But, common purpose doesn't mean that we always work toward the end with respect for each other.

The final level of music is harmony, voices layered one upon another, combined with melody (now supplemented with chords) and rhythm. This is the highest level of relationship too; because it is finally when each of us hears the melody of God in our life, we are moved by the Spirit, AND we are reflecting Jesus's love when we are working together for God's common purpose and we are in harmony with other people and the world's resources.

I loved how the musicians and singers flexed with the audible.

    Great quote!
