Above and Beyond

  • Printing bulletins
  • Creating graphics
  • Proofing prayers
  • Writing sermons
  • Volunteering at homeless shelters
  • Mentoring youth
  • Practicing music
  • Greeting visitors
  • Emailing newsletters
  • Writing curriculum
  • Organizing events
  • Answering emails
  • Cleaning up messes
  • etc… etc… etc…

Sometimes we go above and beyond what is asked of us.

But why?

Is it because we feel that we must be obedient and do whatever we can so that we can receive the Kingdom of God?

Sometimes I think we get caught up in the details of doing God’s work that we forget why we are doing God’s work.

When we forget why we are doing God’s work… we stop working for God and start working for ourselves.

At the beginning of every worship planning meeting we have here at Our Saviour’s, we take time to discuss some faith stories that we encountered during the previous worship weekend. Stories are shared of how our worship services touched the life of someone who really needed to feel God’s presence. We are reminded that all the decisions and the late nights and the drafts and proofing that we labored over the previous week was all worth it.

That is why we do what we do!

Why do you go above and beyond?

Do you do those every week? That's a really cool idea…Thanks man.

Yup! Us staff on the worship planning team share faith stories with the rest of the team at the beginning of our weekly meetings every Tuesday! :)

no kidding…In my mind it was like…"one per week!?" feeling like that would be a lot. But I guess if they weren't monumental, but just good, it could work.

But really, I underestimate what God's up to in our community. He's doing some good work, we should talk about it more often.

This part of the meeting usually only takes about 5 minutes or so. It's just a nice way to start planning for the upcoming weekend. With a good reminder of "why" we do what we do. You guys should try it!

My Dad always warned me not to do so much work for God that I forget God. I think that it is a real issue but so long as we keep ourselves in check and our relationship with God first then it will be ok. Failing that – there is coffee :)

A very close friend and I were talking the other day about this topic. As church workers… our job is to bring people to Christ. We need to keep that at the front of our minds and actions.

      Coffee works too :)
