Reason #572 I Quit Radio

091909_radiomic

I graduated college with a BA in Broadcast Communications. To complete my degree I had to spend a semester as a radio DJ for my school’s radio station. I learned a lot about the fast paced world that the radio DJ has to deal with. I ultimately decided it wasn’t for me, not so much because I can’t handle the pressure… but because I realized very quickly that the majority (not all) of the big name radio DJ’s are quite full of themselves and can be jerks.

Earlier this week 93.3 FLZ in Tampa Bay had a phone interview scheduled with Taylor Swift. Their morning show DJ “MJ” was doing the interview.

Taylor addressed the Kanye question and then asked, 3 times, to move on to something else. “MJ” kept at it… it was clearly upsetting Taylor and her PR person finally got on the phone and ended the interview. Taylor made a good point in the interview… that the whole event happened on TV and everybody saw it. There really isn’t any ‘new’ information to discuss. I think “MJ” the DJ was pretty rude.

I was thinking about this and thinking about why I didn’t go into radio and decided I’m glad that I work at a church instead. Of course “MJ” is right that all the other radio stations that day probably asked her about it. But I’m hoping that they moved on quickly. In today’s society, I’d like to think that radio listeners would be proud of their station for NOT asking the Kanye question and letting Taylor move on with her life.

This just rubbed me the wrong way.

Large Groups Dancing Like Monkeys

So I’m sure we’ve all heard about Oprah’s 24th Season Kickoff Party by now. But if not… here’s the video of the Black Eyed Peas performing “I’ve Got A Feeling”. At first you think that the girl in the front row is just dancing all by herself… (which she is) and everyone is looking at her like she’s nuts (which she might be) but then about 7 others behind her get jiggy with it too and it just takes off into radical choreographed awesomeness!

So this reminded me of the flash mobness that happened after Michael Jackson’s death in cities across the world.

Perry Noble’s 4 Chairs

Julia and I attended the 6:00pm worship service last night at NewSpring Church in Anderson, South Carolina. We had the privilege of hearing Perry Noble preach. He was pretty unapologetic about making some people angry. I liked that. He said that there are 4 chairs that we could possibly sitting in on our journey through faith. The following are just the notes I jotted down for each.

1. Condemned

  • Just because we don’t like something doesn’t mean it isn’t true.
  • The ten commandments are morality 101.

2. Convenience

  • We expect God’s universe to revolve around us but we won’t revolve around the universe God created.
  • If your kid’s like the church but the parent doesn’t like the music and you leave the church and go to a different one… and your kids start hating church… and you come crawling back to your first church because you want your kids to like church… How many parents in the country would kill to be in that position?!
  • We are Christ followers only when it’s convenient for us to be.

3. Contribution

  • I’m gonna volunteer and do my part… but don’t expect me to follow Jesus during the week.
  • People won’t invite people to church because then they’d have to explain to them why they live the way they live outside the church.

4. Crucified

  • We take things to seriously.
  • My time is not my time… it’s God’s time.
  • This church [NewSpring] doesn’t exist to serve you! It exists so that people can come to know Christ.
  • We delete your hate emails and mock you!
  • The ‘crucified’ serve, they’re generous, not greedy, they hold nothing back.
  • Complacency  will put you back in another chair.
